Succeeding in Middle School:
4-Day Summer Workshop for Rising 6th Graders
Moving from elementary school to middle school has its challenges. It can be scary and exciting at the same time! For many, the transition to becoming a successful middle school student—neurologically and socially—is a gradual one, and being more independent doesn’t happen overnight.
How can you help your child with the transition from elementary school to middle school?
At CES, we recognize smooth school transitions as essential factors in student success. Whether your child attends a private or public school, small or large, transiting from 5th to 6th grade often comes with major changes.
Our Succeeding in Middle School summer workshop was developed to prepare rising 6th graders for the three key components of a successful transition to middle school:
Adjusting to the new school environment,
reinforcing essential math skills, and
strengthening language arts techniques and strategies.
Workshop Schedule
Students will meet in small groups for two hours and 30 minutes each day of the 4-day workshop:
9:30am-10:00am Students will receive step-by-step guidance about handling the main environmental and social differences between elementary and middle school with strategies and resources to prepare for the change.
10:00am-11:00am The core math skills students learned in elementary school will be reviewed and reinforced, such as place value, fractions, and word problems. Fluency in these elementary skills is extremely important as students begin applying them to higher-level math processes in middle school.
11:00am-12:00pm Language arts skills for reading comprehension, writing, vocabulary, speaking and listening, literary elements, and research skills will be reinforced and enhanced, while providing essential techniques and habits for readiness in advanced English Language Arts practices.
